19 Reasons Middle-Age Gay Men Need to Get Over Their Midlife Crises
For more than 15 years, my scholarly interest has been in collecting and interpreting personal histories of gay men in Australia and in other English-speaking countries including Hong Kong, India, England, New Zealand, and the USA. Long before I began this, my interest in personal histories evolved from the many years I spent meeting and speaking with gay men in bars and clubs and during fleeting or long-term intimate relationships. Reality does not always match the stuff of dreams and while for some coming out can be a wrench, for others it can be an easy transition, depending on their social situation.
Generational identity and ageing are strong themes in my work. The former developed as an interest when I was comparing experiences of different cohorts and noticed how changing social mores, in particular homophobia, affected their well being and sense of self—thus supporting an argument that sexual identities were historically contingent Robinson, My interest in ageing arose because of the valorisation of youthfulness that I observed on the gay scene decades ago.
A long-standing, familiar trope in the history of homosexuality, I found it to be strongest in the baby-boomers—because of the extensive commercial scene that was created for them, which included clubs, bars, warehouse or circuit parties—and was interested in its effect on how they aged and prepared for old age Robinson, To illustrate the appeal of personal history research and some of the effects of ageing on sexually adventurous gay men, I have included here unpublished and unanalysed extracts from interviews I had with two men in their mids.
To relieve depression … I started going to the gym and … then I discovered that my body was changing even at my age, which was almost 50 and it was making a difference to my sex life … I was meeting new people a lot of the time and that [a toned body] was the currency that mattered. There are probably similar things about financial security and loneliness that are exactly the same but there are other things that are not and I think it all depends on … understanding what you like … because there are people who … do have a sensual desire to not necessarily live their lives … with … [the same] partner … I do not know that I am that type but I hope that over the years I … find that balance.
I included these two extracts to illustrate the importance of youthfulness to gay men who are involved in the scene and sexually adventurous and also how difficult it can be for them to find and maintain a companionate relationship, which seemed to be what the man from the Bronx was hinting at. The extracts showed also how much rich, intimate detail can be revealed in personal histories. In these two examples, there was evidence of existential trials brought on by, in one case, the end of a long-term relationship and the commencement of body-building and a consequent increase in sexual appeal to others and, in the other case, between the desire for a continuing relationship and the allure of fleeting sexual encounters.
A survey finds 57% of gay men over the age of 45 are single compared to 39% of lesbians. David Hudson explores potential reasons for the. Q: I am a gay man in my late 50s and have never been in a relationship. I am so lonely, and the painful emptiness I feel is becoming absolutely.
After the dissolution of my year relationship, I found myself in a unique situation. What would I, as a year-old gay, Latino man living in the Valley, have to offer the dating world? I mean, I had always sensed that aging in youth-oriented Los Angeles, and having the ability to find love in the middle ages, would not be pretty. And I had always been told once a gay man hits his 50s, "paying for it" was the norm. First, though, I had to untangle my mangled emotions.
So for that, I am thankful.
Thanks for that one, Dan! But the guys I get involved with, date, fuck, etc.

Being candidly honest, as I approached 50, I had a pre, present, and post meltdown of sorts. I had never had a problem with any milestone birthdays. Loved my 20s, found myself in my 30s, and rebirthed myself in my 40s.
Gay dating in your 50s
Because, like me, if you're gay and in your 50s, you watched virtually all of your male friends and acquaintances die agonizing deaths, often at what should have been the prime of their lives, with little support or compassion from elected leaders, often families, in a war, a holocaust, that didn't mark them as heroes or innocent, only cold dust. And because to die while your friends died around you, daily, memorial services filling up your datebooks like smartphones now fill up cocktail parties, and to be told you deserved it, is hell on earth. And you survived that hell. Because if you lived in a big city in the 80s and the 90s, and you had sex with men even once , men you loved, men you wanted to grow old with, your life was a daily game of Russian Roulette. Did that rash mean you got the bullet, or would it be the guy pumping iron next to you? And if it wasn't you, there was always tomorrow Because older gay men are as attractive as all get-out. You are the last generation of gay death and the first generation of a new gay life, and that experience makes you more beautiful than any bicep bulge or flat stomach. And should anyone call you a "tired old queen" or "past his prime" or, in the immortal words of Jethro Tull, "too old to rock and roll," their ignorant words should only make you grateful you know otherwise. Because, in the immortal words of Helen Reddy, "It's wisdom borne of pain. Because you can still work on getting all those younger references that too often sail right past you. Because, Yeezus Christ, why not?
5 Guidelines For Gay Dating After 50
A subset of these men who have sex with men, or MSM, live lives that are, in all respects other than their occasional homosexual encounters, quite straight and traditionally masculine — they have wives and families, they embrace various masculine norms, and so on. They are able to, in effect, compartmentalize an aspect of their sex lives in a way that prevents it from blurring into or complicating their more public identities. Sociologists are quite interested in this phenomenon because it can tell us a lot about how humans interpret thorny questions of identity and sexual desire and cultural expectations. But not all straight MSM have gotten the same level of research attention. Silva sought to find out more about these men, so he recruited 19 from men-for-men casual-encounters boards on Craigslist and interviewed them, for about an hour and a half each, about their sexual habits, lives, and senses of identity. It provides them with their fundamental sense of self; it structures how they understand the world around them; and it influences how they codify sameness and difference. In some of the subcultures Ward studied, straight MSM were able to reinterpret homosexual identity as actually strengthening their heterosexual identities.

But just how far can a good career, life experience and grey pubic hair take you these days in the complex digital dating scene? Before you pass judgement however, take yourself back to your early 20s. What Gym-Buns has overlooked, however, is that when it comes to good sex, experience counts for something and those so-called relics have had three decades of practice — meaning the young guns may be missing out on the ride of their life.
