Infinity Ward "actively working" on Modern Warfare 3 weighted matchmaking issue

Skip to: Content Filter by Content Type Search. Modern Warfare 3 is great. But why couldn't they fix arguably the most complained about issue in all of gaming? If you were anything like me then you were counting the minutes until Modern Warfare 3 appeared. But then the brilliance of Battlefield 3 tempered those feelings. I am of course talking about the PC version here. It's difficult to express how contemptible that decision is - after all the rage from MW2.

This is discussed more, below. All MW3 had to do was to be a re-launch of MW2 with proper dedicated servers and it would be one of the greatest games of all time. It didn't. It made the laziest update to a game ever. It's MW2 copied with tracing paper this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In terms of making a PC update, it's lazier still: Console players won't have nearly the same issues due to matchmaking systems that have always worked in this way.

I so want to hate it for this, but I just can't stop playing it. It's so addictive and so potentially great. But to repeat not having proper multiplayer again is so disappointing and infuriating at the same time. It's like being given a Ferrari that's limited to 50mph. It will launch with a thrill and whizz round bends but the longer you drive it you'll be going, "Come on! Stop fannying around! Online, people are loving it. But the unanimous feeling across the board is, disappointment based upon why didn't they have proper dedicated servers this time round?

There is also disappointment that the gun camos are rather poor - but that complaint seems to be in a distant second place. You don't get to play on the map you want to play on. Some maps as MW2 showed us, turn up once every or so cycles. Aside from a Halo -style vote-for-one-of-two-options addition to the game, you get what you're given. Suck it up. The system is supposed to find a host and then connect people who all have equal performance computers and pings.

This virtually never worked properly for MW2 and lo and behold, it still doesn't work for MW3 now. It's not like the developers didn't know. I simply don't believe the following quote from the developer's blog:. I'm extremely excited about the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 this year, because we've been taking your feedback since Modern Warfare 2,and the franchise as a whole, on what you wanted to see in the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 and the team at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games has put aton of emphasis on delivering a PC experience that brings in all the great things we added in Modern Warfare 2: I put in over hours of game time to Modern Warfare 2 and I never heard a positive word about the matchmaking system.

The differences in ping are huge. Be prepared to unload a full magazine in someone's face only for them to shoot you once in return and you're dead. Expect that a lot. Watching the opposing killcam shows that you were firing a full metre past your subject from their PoV. Fluctuating pings. If you hold Tab down and view the scores and pings of people, you'll almost certainly watch as some peoples' pings fluctuate all over the place.

It's not like this is an expected foible of a new launch, this happened all the time in MW2. What lessons were learned? Every now and then, you came across a blatant hacker in MW2. There were heaps of hacks available and hackers were shameless about it - people shooting through walls, having enemies highlighted all over the map, ridiculous aimbots were some I personally saw. You also heard accusations of "auto knife" and other things.

Has there ever been a more hacked and ruined multiplayer game? Many people said they stopped playing the PC version because of all the hacks. But the problem was exacerbated Because of the pings and because of the hacks, the accusations for hacking were constant. Anyone who was actually good was rounded on as a hacker and even those who didn't complain regularly felt very suspicious. It's already started on MW3. Anecdotal evidence is that the same MW2 hacks work on MW3.

Consequently everyone is suspicious of everyone else the whole time and this leads to There may be other games which generate more rage then Modern Warfare, but I've not played them. The abuse gets as vile as you can get - whether through audio or text chat. You can mute some of it, but usually that happens after the event. Whether it's someone crowing and humiliating someone they beat down or swearing blue murder at being killed because of alleged hax And of course Having no server admins, you can't ban anyone or enforce rules.

Back in MW2 days, all you could do was 'Report someone to Steam '. Nothing ever happened. There's no point. And with the number of hacking-allegations-to actual-hacking-taking-place ratio, what realistic chance does Steam have to investigate? As such you're stuck with freaks all night whether they're cheating, abusive or un-playably good.

Finding a game is hard enough in first place, if you live in Australia. But if you keep leaving a lobby to get away from someone you'll almost certainly get dumped right back in with them within a couple of matches if not straight away. Also, expect completely unbalanced player skills. Here's one match I played in above. The guy who won had a kill streak in the first ten seconds. Or very good? We'll never know. It was a crap game to play in though.

I can't speak for the rest of the world, but as with MW2 it's already clear that there are some game types that you'll be lucky to ever play on a level playing field. In Australia, you'll usually be able to find a Free For All map, but if you like Sabotage or HQ Pro, chances are you'll be in for a very long matchmaking wait and end up playing with Americans on a ridiculous ping. There are not enough people in some regions. Finally, I'm sure there are other reasons , MW2 is all but unplayable now.

It became so once Black Ops appeared. This is directly because of the matchmaking system. There aren't enough local players online at any one time to populate all but a few match types. As such, one of the greatest games ever is moribund. Quite often, people like me, would like to pick a map or a game type and we don't mind what, so long as there are other people on a server with a low ping.

Waiting around for several minutes, just to see if anyone nearby is online, is a fantastic waste of time. In the end it took hackers to get MW2 working properly. It was all so easily fixed. The people were practically unanimous in their appraisal of the system for at least a year while MW2 was around, but have been treated by utmost contempt by Activision. Perhaps it's a way of guaranteeing people buy MW4? Or is that too cynical? Is it just Australia that suffers in this way? Now that some dedicated servers are up and running and I've had a go, there are a fair few concerns.

Firstly, not being ranked is going to be an issue for many people. You win Who noticed? Most gamers I know rage if they lose their internet points when an online game crashes late on. It affects their unlocks too. Secondly, being forced to play with default loadouts and perks, is a bit of a pain to say the least. I'm sure some people will gravitate to the same servers naturally over time ones where their loadout preferences are catered for but just jumping on one and losing all your hard-earned optimizations feels harsh.

Thirdly, and this may be an Australian issue, the last thing MW3 needs is for the online community to be fragmented even more. It's hard enough finding people in regular matchmaking sessions as it is, without knowing that some are off in a different place. I fear there will be a two-tiered system of online play for MW3.

Speaking from my personal location in Canada- with the number of people playing in N.
