Dating site OKCupid admits to Facebook-style psychological testing on users
Social scientists have a long-standing interest in how and why personality differs across geographic regions. Not true. And how did I determine that you have low sex drive or are super judgmental? I limited this analysis to questions that have been answered over 1 million times from to This resulted in questions covering a wide range of topics e.
This data meant I could create a profile for the typical user in each MSA, determining the likelihood that they would give a particular answer to every one of the questions. Instead of making thousands of maps to show how frequently different MSAs gave every answer to each of the questions, I used a statistical method called factor analysis to find patterns in how questions were answered. Factor analysis takes a dataset with a huge number of variables and automatically looks for patterns.
The factor analysis finds patterns based on which responses tend to co-occur in different cities. We can interpret these patterns to inform personality scales, or traits. So thanks to the factor analysis, we only need to make a map showing how strongly each region expressed a particular personality scale i. After running the analysis, we get a set of personality traits that describe how the residents of US cities differ from one another. To determine the traits that the responses may signify, we looked at the answers with the largest positive or negative point values, and figured out what word or concept best described the pattern we saw.
The factor analysis found that U. These scales are ordered so that the first one explains the biggest differences between cities, and the second describes a little less, and so on and so on. But again, some findings are a bit more surprising. Now more than ever, politics are polarizing. It was the trait that revealed the biggest differences between cities. From this, I was able to create two maps that show the most liberal purple and conservative orange metro regions in the US.
The results are not particularly surprising; small college towns top the list as the most liberal. The regional map should look familiar to those of you who cannot despite your best efforts repress memory of the election. Looking over the answers, you develop a sense of the types of people who would exhibit leanings at either end of the spectrum, but coming up with a word for this scale is a bit more challenging. Places at one end of the scale have a larger proportion of residents with passports and are looking for a well-educated, career-motivated partner to start a family with.
At one end of the scale are places where people spend Sunday mornings going to boozy brunches; at the other end are places where people spend Sunday morning in church. Places where people go to a boozy brunch after church are a little less clear. Openness increase dramatically as you move from east to west. This map in particular explains why legalization efforts have succeeded where they have.
Next stop… Florida? Regions that score high on cleanliness have people that have clean bodies and clean homes, and demand the same of their partners. Comparing the places that scored high on cleanliness vs. Additionally, the most judgmental regions are not the more religious or conservative regions. The judgy-est region is the Mid-Atlantic, thanks in large part to Pennsylvania, where voters repeatedly elected Rick Santorum….
At one end of this scale are people that like going on outdoor adventures, whereas people on the other end of the scale like to tweet and go to restaurants. For apps and zerts. Cities at one end of this personality scale are known for drinking and sex. These virginal regions include the aforementioned Bible Belt, as well as the Jell-o Belt.
Even though Salt Lake City scores very low on this trait as residents are generally are anti-partying , people who live there are cool with drug use and pretty non-judgmental about sex. Cities at one end of this scale are filled with nerdy, logical people; cities at the other end have more of the artsy, free-spirit types. You non-nerds can think of this as a Ross vs. So much for the stereotypes of wholesome heartland values and foul-mouthed New Yorkers….
However, there are a number of extreme outliers scattered throughout the eastern half of the US with scores that are way higher than their neighbors. Some are infamous party towns like Miami and New Orleans. The rest are all home to large military bases:. At one end are cities with a lot of actual grown-ups and adults, and at the end are cities have lots of students and people who would brag about adulting.

He said, "If you use the Internet, you're the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That's how websites work. When people were told they are a good match, they were more likely to send each other messages through the site. To test if its matching algorithm works and goes beyond the power of suggestion, OkCupid also told good matches that they were bad matches. Good matches, even if told they weren't compatible, still connected but not as much as when they knew their actual compatibility. In another experiment, OkCupid asked users to rate people's looks and personalities based on their profiles. In profiles without text, people tended to rate a better personality with better looks.

Is the "Dating Persona Test" still available somewhere online? Back in the day when OkC had lots of quizzes, they had a test that assigned you one of a collection of personality types, as a take off of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Each type similarly had four letter codes along with a archetypal character and a short description. I believe this was the URL for it, but as you can see it's no longer there: Does anyone know of a place where these personality types have been archived? I don't care so much about the actual test part, but I'm interested to see the names, letter codes, and descriptions of all the types because I'm interested in how they correlate to the MBTI personality types. I've searched around but haven't found the original pages.

They told people who were bad matches 30 per cent that they actually had a compatibility score of 90 per cent. Lying to users, it turned out, sometimes sparked meaningful online chats.
