The diaphragm is designed to move when there is a pressure differential between your charge piping and your manifold basically, when you close your throttle and your engine goes to vacuum but your turbo is still trying to push air. This pressure differential causes the blow off valve to open, and you give the pressurized air a place to go before you get a really big spike and stall your turbo. Note — keeping your turbo spinning between shifts also reduces lag.
If you stall your turbo, you have to get that joker back up to speed, which takes time. It all comes down to how easy the valve is to open how much pressure differential there has to be before it moves , how quickly it opens, and how much it opens which, among a few other things, determines how much it can flow. More on that later. Here it is, removed from the vehicle: Yeah, its missing a bolt. Remove the bolts except for 2 that are opposite of each other. Contents are under spring load, so put some pressure on the cap while you remove the last 2 bolts evenly. The top should pop off and reveal the guts. This unit has 2 springs. Internet wisdom suggests removing the small spring gets this BOV to acceptable performance levels for most automobiles. I have yet to read a review that suggests this valve worked for anyone right out of the box.
Seems like literally everyone has to do this spring mod. This valve also has an integrated secondary boost source — the bottom nipple that seems to confuse the heck out of everyone, as is evident by this picture here: Put the little top hat doohickey on there, make sure the adjustment screw is backed all the way out, and put the valve cap back on again, EVENLY!
Make sure the diaphragm is seated normally. Adjust your adjuster down to where you think it needs to go take a guess if you have to , put it back on your charge piping, hook the lines back up, and take it for a ride. One more note: Venting to atmosphere? Plumb that sucker in recirculate for easier tuning, increased performance, and a more professional image. Happy boosting! A blow off valve goes under many different names such as dump, bypass, recirc short for recirculation , diverter, and pop off valves. No one term is correct, the lingo just tends to change in different regions and countries. Basically these valves are all designed to the same job, and we will refer to all types as blow-off valves to save confusion. What it does: The only job a blow-off valve is supposed to perform is to relieve excess turbo pressure that results from shutting the throttle rapidly under boost conditions. This then answers one of the questions we get asked a lot — yes you need a turbo to fit a blow-off valve! Otherwise you will have a rather expensive paper-weight. It is necessary to release this pressure because it will try to find a way out of the system, and the only way is back out through the turbo. This produces a fluttering noise as the air passes backwards through the turbo, which is often unwanted. There is also a school of thought that a blow-off valve can improve turbocharger longevity or, in extreme cases, prevent damage to the turbo. There are two ways in which the majority of blow-off valves work. Most aftermarket and many factory types use two pressure signals to determine when the valve should open.

On a turbo engine, the BOV is used to relieve the pressure from the turbo output when the throttle is closed. These valves are only used on engines with the blow-through turbo setup. Vacuum is supplied by a connection on the throttle body, while the BOV inlet is connected to the turbo output hose. While in boost, the valve remains closed and the turbo pumps air into the engine normally. Without the BOV, when the throttle is closed the turbo is suddenly trying to pump air against a closed throttle plate.

The atmospherically vented blow off valve simply dumps the excess, vented air to the atmosphere.
