Starcraft 2 matchmaking problems
For around two years of my gaming life I was obsessed with Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty. I got decent at it too, hovering around Platinum League with occasional forays into Diamond - the Koreans were hardly quaking in their boots, but I could hold my own at a reasonable level. More importantly I loved Starcraft 2. I watched it all the time, followed the tournaments and the Korean GSL, and studied the strategies of players I especially admired.

To hide spoilers use format: Other SC2 made me hate myself self. I'm a Diamond 3 zerg on EU. I haven't played any sc2 in a couple of days and wanted to get some rust off by playing some unranked games. I got matched vs a protoss and completely destroyed him.
When I checked out his profile after the game, I saw that he started playing two weeks before our game with a dozen games vs AI. Then he played 3 unranked games and lost all of them. Clearly upset, he didn't play any sc2 for the next 5 days until yesterday. Perhaps eager to give sc2 another go, he hopped into some more games vs AI to get more practice before going for another unranked game vs a real opponent.
That was the game that we played together. What are the chances that this new player will ever go back to sc2 after a series of crushing defeats like that? How does blizzard imagine they can retain new players, when they match people with 3 unranked games total vs someone with several years of sc2 experience? I'm not sure, but I definitely felt like crap about myself after that game. I had a similar experience yesterday, whispered him after the game with something like "hey, saw you're new, don't know why the game matched you with me, welcome to starcraft" etc.
Wait is this for real?? I thought it was based on what difficulty your first AI games were set to! I'm not sure, as I don't play many games. I think Heroes of Newerth does it, maybe DotA2. I think I remember that question from CS: GO, also maybe Paladins. But thanks. Me and my friend would pay money for it to stop resetting our ranks for not playing for a few months.
We didn't forget how to shoot a gun in that time and we're just unintentionally smurfing the shit out of people and it isn't doing anybody any good. I'm pretty sure new ranked accounts start with a default MMR somewhere in mid silver for your first placements. Heroes of the Storm does now and I believe it changes the tutorial depending on how you answer. And I believe Battlerite did as well but I'm not positive. And collect APM, money spending, supply block.. Then depending on league stats, try to place you in a league that is representative of your skills.
As a new player I still can't really get why everyone seems to find APM so important show of skill. The way I see this is that good player will probably have high APM, but high APM is way to easy to spam for to be any valid measure of game skill. D but spamming increases overall speed in time. You start reacting things faster than you used to be. It is mostly valueable to see if the player has very low apm like for example 60 ish in which case the player is probably still learning the game, most players that habe experience will sit between and and players in higher leagues will go above that.
It's not super important data but it can be usefull. A bigger issue is new players losing 25 games in a row as they start facing Plats and gradually go down to facing Golds then Silvers. Whoever with new accounts being put vs Golds it's 10 out of 10 games that new player's are getting wrecked in, not just 1 in Barely ranked myself in last season played 5 games, fist two vs diamondsand the 3 following against 2 plat and 1 gold 1, lost 4 of them and only beat one of the plat players got ranked silver 2 and called it quit.
I picked sc2 up again this season i really have never played starcraft beyond campaign and 2v2s with friends before and after my first match i got placed bronze 1, proceeded to win my following 10 matches and now I'm a proud gold 3 and feel thats where i belong at the moment, My micro is pretty lacking but so is my opponents and if their micro is better my macro will beat theirs. I had a far better experience fighting against low skilled players to start into the season than i had when i got stomped by apm zerg.
No no no. You've got it backwards. Smurf accounts should advance very quickly so they can't keep beating lower league players. Only if you didn't pay for the game aka free starter edition, wins against ai count, only one win per day counts, yes that equals ten days minimum. This is to try to force starter edition players to buy the game, after ten days blizzard says f it they clearly wont buy it and opens up the functionality.
Hey man, don't be too hard on yourself, me myself was a new SC2 player and i've been playing for almost a year and a half. I was a free user before and bought the 3 physical boxes after 4 month's of playing coop in casual mode.: But it didn't kill my aspiration to be better, it made want to progress further, even up to this day, i still have ladder unranked anxiety, but i know that with the right mindset and steady consistent practice, i can overcome my demons.: And avilo was even mass reaper take all base strat.: So don't be too hard on yourself, we'll all make progress.
Maybe one day will come and that new player that you're talking about will gain enough skills to go toe to toe with you and reach diamond. Cheers friend -sorry for grammar and long post. This reminds me of the time I was introducing Starcraft pre-BW to one of my best friends. I'd been playing a while and he was new so I was being a little passive, giving him time to feel it out. I scouted around and found an expansion and decided to take it out with a couple dozen lings.
The game ended. Then I made it worse by apologizing. I think Blizzard sets new account's MMR to gold or platinum or something. It was OK before F2P but now new account is mostly really new player. New account' MMR should be set to bronze. Just did my placements last night. Idk what the first 2 ppl where but last 3 where gold. All kicked my ass fast. Good job! The most fun i've had in sc2 is by thinking of strategies and seeing how they played out, what the opponent did to counter it and what i could do to counter what he did, ect..
Yeah, I haven't ever played versus except vs AI but tried it out yesterday. I went in my placements and my MMR is around 3k and placed me in gold 3. I mean back in you had an optional 50 practice league games then 5 placements. The chances were if you were new you'd lose 4 or 5 of them and get placed in bronze or silver. Either way you would climb up the ladder learning along the way. The new MMR system is pretty shitty from top to bottom, its to easy to get decent MMR for returning players and its to hard to find a decent starting point for newer ones.
I feel like the MMR system needs to be harsher tbh. The fact that I can come back from month breaks and get into masters 1 without a sweat isnt fun anymore. For someone new to the game getting dumped on by diamond 3's with mmr probably isnt fun. Maybe they should consider using the performance based MMR calculation Heroes of the Storm is introducing next patch. In most cases where players aren't effectively trying to game the system, it would probably be very accurate.
I think it would be good if they only implemented it for the first 10 or so games, then turned it off. That way it would take away the incentive to game the system. It's seriously a big issue. Telling new players that they have to play lose 25 games, until the system will match them against equal opponents, just sucks. Not only that, but you need to get 10 first win of the day bonuses to unlock ladder. If they get matched vs people so far beyond their skill level in unranked, then they are practically forced to grind away vs AI, which isn't fun to do at all.
Yeah, I'm a gold player and often get paired with Diamond players in unranked, which sucks ass. That simply means you win alot in unranked. Also current rank is very misleading now since you have separate MMR for each race. Just because you see a diamond border does not mean you're facing diamond level competition. That was terrifying. You might be right, I could have just joined a custom melee then. It was almost 7 years ago, so I'm not sure.
Got placed against a master former gm player in my third placement because I beat a diamond: They probably have an offrace with gold mmr. I think the PSA should be don't play unranked if you're already placed and are open to ladder. You can always get matched vs an opponent who is playing unranked. The only difference is, that you won't lose MMR when playing unranked. Not sure if it is still the same, but it was. Yeah the idea is about getting better. You win?

Besides maintaining a high enough MMR, Grandmaster players need to play at least 30 games every 3 weeksto retain their spot. I think most using don't have UPnP enabled in their routers. After 13, ladder matches and a year-and-a-half of non-stop, heart-pounding, genre-defining action that will no doubt define the human race and their accomplishments as a species, I can firmly conclude that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the worst video game that I have ever played. I thought that Deus Ex was the worst game of all-time but it turned out that I was wrong. StarCraft II made my balls itch that much harder. I am done with this worthless video game, and I want everybody to know why I will be purchasing the StarCraft II expansion pack Heart of the Swarm on the second day instead of the first. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was already in a bad mood because the service claims to match players of equal skill, but here I am, playing people in Bronze League. Yeah, okay. Apparently, the matchmaking system does not care how many noobs you no-scoped on Xbox Live, where the real athletes perform. Even worse, my dad was heading up to the store, and my mom told me that I had to keep an eye on my little brother.
